“…you can teach someone but you cannot learn someone – in recognition of the fact that learning is an internal, personal, and ultimately individual act. It takes energy to learn – one’s own energy.”

- Michael Allen

Arun Pradhan made a very interesting comment on the L&D go Beyond Podcast. He spoke about about how throwing food cannot be considered eating, similarly throwing training at people also cannot be considered learning.

So how and when do people learn?

Learning needs people’s own energy and just pushing training to them does not help. You need to make the training engaging enough for learners so that they invest the energy to learn.

Scenarios are one of the most efficient ways to motivate and engage learners.

While simply presenting content does provide learners with the information they need, but presenting it in a form of a scenario tells them a lot more. Learners start engaging deeper when there is a scenario portrayed. Scenarios simulate critical thinking and help learners see things beyond the obvious. They also offer practice opportunities and provide feedback which keeps learners engaged and motivated to spend efforts while they strengthen their learning.

Creating engaging scenario-based learning is something our team has perfected over the years. We are well au fait of the potential of scenario-based learning and have developed it for many clients to impact all three – learning engagement, retention, and application.

Scenarios make courses engaging, real, and effective!

Here are the different forms in which we use scenarios in the learning interventions we create.

Cluster of Mini-Scenarios

Short scenarios under one umbrella story ensure variety and keeps learners amused and attentive. They also ensures that each piece of content is understood and comprehended well.

Branched Scenarios

Branched Scenarios give learners control of the situation and provide a clear picture of the path they choose. This can have a direct transfer of learning, leading learners to take the onus of the situation in real life as well.

Scenarios with Q&A

Pairing scenarios with Q&A is one of the most effective strategies to stimulate critical thinking. It facilitates decision making, helps learners retain the importance of the concepts covered, and avoid any pitfalls.

The New York State Psychiatric Institute (NYSPI) wanted healthcare practitioners to navigate discussions with patients through the use of a specialized technique called Shared Decision Making (SDM). To demonstrate the application of the SDM technique in real-life situations, we worked on a role-play driven intervention. Working with NYSPI, we arrived at an innovative solution comprising a mind map framework, infographics, character illustrations, and role-play examples.
The solution made it easy for the learners to absorb the main message by building a strong foundation of basics before diving deeper into its practical applications. Engaged learners through realistic video-based role plays to demonstrate how the various models and techniques could be implemented in patient care.

The World Bank Group wanted a learning solution to structure their communication based on the concept of Main Message Upfront. The learning intervention’s aim was to help employees write more effective reports and prepare other non-technical communication. We helped them with a fully responsive, exercise-based training solution which went beyond just communicating guidelines—it brought to the fore situations that mimicked reality and helped employees with informed decision-making.
The solution was a mobile-friendly learning intervention with engaging visuals, infographics, and comic-book style presentation. It comprised focused practice exercises encouraged the learners to think and helped them with practical application.

One of our clients wanted to train their regular non-IT employees in identifying potential cyber security threats and avoiding cyber-attacks.
We recommended a two-pronged solution focused on learning by doing through decision-making. Activity-based learning through interactive videos was followed by a mini-scenario based assessment. An interactive video-based intervention, this program leveraged the narrator’s perspective to present consequences based on learner choices.
